Abby Joy Campbell

Our Joy

Born at 37 weeks, Abby Joy’s journey began with incredible challenges—but also with an unshakable spirit. From her very first moments, she faced a world of medical complexities with courage and joy that inspired those around her. Abigail means “my father’s joy,” a name chosen by her parents, Cody and Brittany, during an incredibly difficult pregnancy. Although her life was short, the love that Abby Joy experienced and the joy she brought to others serves as a testimony of God’s love for His children, even during suffering.

Her Story

Despite months spent in the NICU, complex care routines, and endless appointments, Abby Joy radiated joy. She loved to sing along with worship music, ride her balance bike around the house and giggle with her older siblings. She filled her home with laughter, determination, and love. Her parents often said that reading her medical history might make someone expect a sad or quiet child—but Abby Joy was the complete opposite. She was full of life, full of love, and full of joy.

What She Started…

Abby Joy passed away in April 2025. Though her time on earth was brief, her impact continues to grow.

In her memory, her family founded Joy in the Journey, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting families with medically complex children. The organization was born from the joy and strength that defined Abby Joy’s story - and from the deep desire to walk alongside others who are navigating similar paths.

Joy in the Journey exists to remind families that they are not alone. Inspired by Abby Joy’s life, this mission seeks to bring practical help, emotional support, and spiritual encouragement to those walking through medical uncertainty and hardship. Just as Abby Joy’s name reflected her life—joy in the midst of trials—her story now continues through the hope and care extended to others. Her joy still shines, lighting the way for countless families on their own journeys.

Abby Joy’s life and memory was honored with the unveiling of this mural located at Capable Kids’ Hermitage, PA, location. This mural is a testament to her spirit, joy, and the enduring love of her family. It not only commemorates Abby Joy but also serves as a tribute to all children whose lives were cut short too soon. Every brushstroke reflects their bright light and boundless potential.

Memorial garden stones were placed at the base of the mural. Abby Joy’s stone has Skye from Paw Patrol on it because she loved choosing outfits and toys with Skye. Her final visit to the hospital (CHP) was made in a life flight helicopter, so this seemed to be a fitting conclusion to her story. The numbers on the helicopter were changed to 0.35 because she was 3 ½ years old when she passed away.

Throughout the month of May, 2025, Capable Kids invited their clients to help honor Abby Joy. This contest was a way to share healing, hope and remembrance together. “Seeing these colorful works of art fill our office has been such a wonderful tribute to the bright little soul who touched our hearts.” The butterflies pictured were created by Abby Joy’s siblings.
